PURGATORY is the story of an old peddler's madness and the ghosts that haunt the house where he grew up. Many significant recurring themes are brought to light in this work: death and having one's

life evaluated (judgment day), consequences, possible rebirth (a second chance), and finally heaven or hell. This elegant work, at times erie, is supported by rhythms created by the taiko drum, bamboo flute, and the powerful voices of the chorus.

Yuriko Doi, born in Tokyo, founded The Theatre of Yugen in San Francisco in 1978. Yuriko adapted PURGATORY for the Noh stage retaining the original text fusing the style of Noh.
